Complaint:
Ads and other materials received in our production department are on disks that are incompatible with our equipment.
Cause:
With emerging technologies, we're receiving production materials on discs that are either system proprietary or beyond normal capabilities. These media include 80-minute CDR, DVD, CD-RW and ZIP-250.
Correction:
Solutions vary for these types of media. MD Publications plans additional investment in media readers for 2003 to help solve some of the compatibility difficulties.

 

POPULAR DISC MEDIA TYPES, CHARACTERISTICS AND AVERAGE PRICE

CD-R Recordable CD rated at 650 MB or 74 minutes Audio Play Time.  $0.50
CD-R 80 Recordable CD rated at 700 MB or 80 minutes Audio Play Time.  $0.50
CD-RW Re-writable CD rated at 650 MB or 74 minutes Audio Play Time.  $1
DVD-RAM Recordable Digital Versatile Disc rated at 5.25GB. $2
ZIP 100 Re-writable Removable disc rated at 100MB $9
ZIP 250 Re-writable Removable disc rated at 250MB $14

CURRENT STATUS OF ACCEPTABLE MEDIA

CD-R We experience few, if any, problems with these discs.
CD-R 80 Only the newest CD drives can read this media. 
CD-RW This format is designed primarily as an archive format and isn't readily transportable between computers with different operating environments. However, a CD-RW disc is acceptable if formatted as a CD-R disc. This formatting takes place on the machine you use to record information onto the CD-RW disc.
DVD-R We experience few, if any, problems with these discs.
ZIP 100 We experience few, if any, problems with these discs.
ZIP 250 The 250MB disk requires an advanced Zip drive capable of reading the higher disc density format.
